Rivendell Cottage charmingly displays Underhill Farm's eco-credentials to visitors from the moment they step inside.
From the 'windows' made from recycled wine bottles, to the 'ceilings' made from old coffee bean sacks, from the 'walls' made from carefully stacked logs, to the slavaged wooden shutters - everywhere you look there's evidence of upcycling and repurposing going on. Even the roof of the cottage environmentally-friendly - it's been planted with grass, a 'green roof' that keeps the place very warm in winter, and lovely and cool in summer.
But all that sustainability that doesn't come at the expense of comfort - this cottage is amply equipped to serve the weekender's every need.
There's a gorgeous cast iron wood-burning stove in the main living area, a circular plunge pool sunken into the wooden-decked verandah, and, down a small path at the end of the fully-enclosed garden, next to a bubbling stream, there's a rustically paved nook with a fire-pit - perfect for hanging out in the evenings.
Back inside there are two cosy sleeping spaces, one with a king-size bed, the other with twin single beds, and in a corner of the open-plan living space there's a farm-style kitchen, with upcycled wooden worktops and a gas hob.
But its the covered verandah that's the 'jewel in the crown' of this property - there you'll find a huge brick-built braai - lots of days beds to lounge on, and a lovely wooden-topped dining table, all just a few centimeters from the aforementioned plunge pool - what more could you ask for?
