The Free State is not really known as a place to go to on holiday. Best known for its capital Bloemfontein, most treat this city (and Province) as a stop over destination en route to Gauteng (Pretoria & Jhb)
One of the provinces best known holiday destinations is Clarens. Known for it's endless night-sky and a jewel of this province.
Free State is growing into a more pet-friendly destination. Most inhabitants are farmers and used to working dogs - so still getting used to the pet-friendly travel market.
Some of our favourite destinations include: Clarens.
Things To Do
The picturesque small town of Clarens is only 27km from Old Mill Drift farm. Known as the 'jewel of the Free State' Clarens offers a range of independent restaurants, cute crafty shops, and contemporary art galleries, as well as several annual events (such as the Clarens Craft Beer Festival and the Clarens Art Experience).
The immediate area's scores of river dams and lakes offer awesome flyfishing and white water rafting, the beautiful ochre and orange-hued sandstone cliffs and outcrops of Golden Gate National Park are only a 40 minute drive away, and also close by is Surrender Hill, the location of the Moutotlong Fertility Caves, a sacred rock formation upon which pilgrims descend every weekend to pray, meditate and pay their respects to their ancestors.
Most remarkably for a South African vacation destination, if you visit in the colder months to can nip over the border into Lesotho and go skiing and/or snowboarding at the Afriski Mountain Resort - a cool 3,000 m above sea level, but less than a two hours drive away.
